In the early 2000s, when the site was being extensively looted, new archaeological excavations were undertaken by archaeologist Etienne Mantel.
Given the scale of the discoveries, Etienne suspected that the forest was actually home to the remains of a forgotten Roman town. As the excavations progressed, the site gradually revealed its secrets and Etienne’s intuition proved correct: a real town was coming to light. Spectacular discoveries followed one after another, culminating in the discovery that many archaeologists dream of: the name of the unknown town: BRIGA.
