When the Gauls lost their heads

When the Gauls lost their heads

A journey through the main ancient sanctuaries and mausoleums of Corrèze using aerial images and 3D reconstructions created by the Court-jus Production team.

Produced as part of the exhibition ‘Rites and Men – The Symbolic Practices of the Celts, Iberians and Greeks in Provence, Languedoc and Catalonia’, held in Montpellier from 9 July 2011 to January 2012, this film presents a terrifying and extraordinary ritual practised by the Gauls. We learn, in particular, that they were very fond of cutting off the heads of their defeated enemies. These were often their close neighbours, also Celts, with whom conflicts were apparently commonplace. Cut off with a knife, these trophies of war were then displayed on poles or against the city walls. With their skulls pierced with nails and carved with fine incisions that remain a mystery to this day.
