The Temple of Mercury, a Roman work

The Temple of Mercury, a Roman work

The Puy de Dôme, an iconic volcano in the Chaîne des Puys mountain range, rises to a height of 1,464 metres. Its summit is home to the ruins of a colossal temple dedicated to Mercury, the main deity of the Arverni people during Roman times. Since its discovery in the 19th century, the Temple of Mercury has been the subject of numerous excavation campaigns.

Recent research conducted by Dominique Tardy and Jean-Louis Paillet (CNRS – IRAA) has provided insight into the techniques used in the construction of this extraordinary sanctuary, considered one of the most important in the Roman West.
