NEANDERTHAL, IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ANOTHER HUMANITY

Summary

Threatened by coastal erosion, whose ravages are being inexorably accelerated by global warming, the Rozel site in the Cotentin region offers rare insights into the daily life of Neanderthal populations who occupied this remarkable stretch of the Normandy coastline around 80,000 years ago.

Among these fragile remains, archaeologists have uncovered more than 2,000 footprints: the largest collection of Neanderthal footprints in the world! Since 2012, archaeologist Dominique Cliquet has been racing against time to excavate this prehistoric site of international importance before the raging sea engulfs forever the traces of life left in the dunes by the Neanderthal men, women and children who once frequented the area.

Through discoveries in Normandy and other research conducted in recent years throughout Europe and beyond, this unprecedented archaeological investigation takes us on a dizzying journey back in time, following in the footsteps of Neanderthal man. Little by little, behind the daily life of the Neanderthals, archaeology allows us to glimpse what made this extinct species, so different and yet so close to us, human.
