The site of the famous Gallic chief Vercingetorix’s only and fleeting victory over Julius Caesar’s Roman legions, Gergovie is the subject of much speculation. The location of this battle on the slopes of a vast volcanic plateau south of Clermont-Ferrand has often been called into question. Today, in order to put an end to the controversy and identify the location of the famous battle with certainty, archaeologists specialising in the Gallic Wars are conducting an investigation.
