When the Gauls lost their heads

Produced as part of the exhibition "Des rites et des Hommes - Les pratiques symboliques des Celtes, des Ibères et des Grecs en Provence, en Languedoc et en Catalogne" (Of Rites and Men - Symbolic practices of the Celts, Iberians and Greeks in Provence, Languedoc and Catalonia) held in Montpellier from 9 July 2011 to January 2012, this film presents a terrifying and extraordinary ritual practised by the Gauls.

In particular, we learn that they loved to cut off the heads of their defeated enemies. Often those of their close neighbours, also Celts, with whom conflicts were apparently commonplace. Sliced off with bladed weapons, these spoils of war were then displayed on poles or against the city walls. With their cranial surface pierced by nails and sculpted by fine cuts, they remain an enigma to this day.
