THE LUERN FEASTS

In the first century BC, a Greek scholar by the name of Poseidonios wrote about the Arverne king Luern and the gigantic feasts he organised. In July 2001, Matthieu Poux, an archaeologist who had written a thesis on Gallic feasting, began excavations on the site of the Corent plateau in Auvergne. The research focused on a quadrangular enclosure measuring around 60 metres on each side, located in the centre of a vast oppidium covering 70 hectares. The finds there are spectacular: items of finery and weaponry, the 'ghostly' footprints of massive wooden buildings and, above all, thousands of animal remains and wine amphorae: the remains of gigantic feasts ...
